Space–Time Variability of Summer Hydroclimate in the U.S. Prairie Pothole Region

چکیده

Abstract The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) experiences considerable space–time variability in temperature and precipitation, this is expected to increase. PPR sensitive variability—it plays a large role the water availability of region. Thousands wetlands region, sometimes containing ponds, provide habitats breeding grounds for various species. Many wildlife management decisions are planned executed on subseasonal-to-seasonal time scales would benefit from knowledge seasonal conditions at longer lead times. Therefore, it important understand potential driving mechanisms teleconnections behind climate PPR. We performed principal component analysis summer precipitation southeastern (SEPPR) determine leading components (PCs) variability. These PCs were used establish large-scale variables indices. They also There Pacific Atlantic Ocean sea surface temperatures (SST) resembling decadal oscillation El Niño–Southern Oscillation, low 500-hPa heights over western United States, Palmer drought severity index SEPPR. Waterfowl Conservation in the US Prairie Pothole Region: Confronting the Complexities of Climate Change

The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) is the most important waterfowl production area in North America. However, waterfowl populations there are predicted to decline because of climate-related drying of wetlands. Consequently, changes in the geographic focus of PPR waterfowl conservation have been recommended, which could have long-lasting and costly impacts. We used a 40-year dataset of pond counts...

Vulnerability of Breeding Waterbirds to Climate Change in the Prairie Pothole Region, U.S.A

The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of the north-central U.S. and south-central Canada contains millions of small prairie wetlands that provide critical habitat to many migrating and breeding waterbirds. Due to their small size and the relatively dry climate of the region, these wetlands are considered at high risk for negative climate change effects as temperatures increase. To estimate the poten...

Responses of Dabbling Ducks to Wetland Conditions in the Prairie Pothole Region

—The relationships between wetland water conditions and breeding numbers of Mallard ( Anas platyrhynchos ), Northern Pintail ( A. acuta ), Blue-winged Teal ( A. discors ), and Northern Shoveler ( A. clypeata ) during May of 1992-1995, were examined on twelve study areas in the eastern Prairie Pothole Region. Data were collected on water levels (by wetland class [temporary, seasonal, semipermane...

Duck populations as indicators of landscape condition in the Prairie Pothole Region.

The Prairie Pothole Region of the northern Great Plains is an important region for waterfowl production because of the abundance of shallow wetlands. The ecological significance of the region and impacts from intensive agriculture prompted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to select it as one of the first areas for developing and evaluating ecological indicators of wetland condition. We ...
